You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt)
Alice Clark · 1962Recording
Alice Clark cut “You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me)” in 1969 for Warner Bros.-Seven Arts, with George Kerr producing and Richard Tee handling the arrangement. The session followed her 1968 Rainy Day debut and paired the single with “Heaven’s Will (Must Be Obeyed). The record became one of Clark’s defining sides and was later identified as a future Northern soul collectible. It was not a contemporary chart hit, but it stood out for its Motown-style polish and strong vocal performance. In Britain, the track became a staple of the Northern soul scene and later resurfaced in soul and acid-jazz circles. It remains the song most closely associated with Clark’s name and is still treated as a rare classic.
