Mashed Potato Time
Dee Dee Sharp · 1962Recording
Recorded in Philadelphia in 1962 at Cameo Parkway Studio and Reco-Art Sound Recording, with Dee Dee Sharp backed by the Orlons. The single was cut for Cameo under the production of Kal Mann. Released as Dee Dee Sharp’s breakout solo single, it turned the then-current mashed potato dance craze into a major pop and R&B hit. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped establish Sharp as one of Cameo-Parkway’s key teen-pop voices in 1962. The record remained one of the signature dance-pop singles of the early 1960s, and its vocal hook was later echoed in Bobby "Boris" Pickett’s "Monster Mash." It continued to circulate on oldies radio and in compilations as one of Dee Dee Sharp’s best-known songs.
