Recording

Recorded in Los Angeles in 1962, 'Let's Go (Pony)' was a studio session produced by Joe Saraceno and featuring key members of the Wrecking Crew: Earl Palmer on drums, Plas Johnson on saxophone, Tommy Tedesco and Bill Pitman on guitar, and Jimmy Bond on bass, assembled by Michael Z. Gordon who also played guitar. Released on Warner Bros. Records in September 1962, the single reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and its distinctive clap-and-chant opening rapidly became a staple at sporting events and among cheerleaders across the United States. The recording has achieved near-permanent status as one of the most recognizable crowd-rousing instrumentals in American sports culture, played continuously at stadiums and arenas for over six decades and remaining one of the most enduring pop instrumentals of the early 1960s.
