Something's Got A Hold On Me
Etta James · 1962Recording
Recorded at Chess Studios in Chicago during the 1960–62 sessions for Etta James’s self-titled album, with Leonard Chess and Phil Chess producing the single. Riley Hampton handled the orchestral arrangement, and Ron Malo was the recording engineer. Released in 1962 on Argo as the third single from Etta James, the track became a Top 40 pop hit and a top-five R&B record. Its gospel-inflected vocal style helped define James’s early Chess-era sound. The song remained widely heard through later uses and reinterpretations, including major samples in Avicii’s "Levels" and Flo Rida’s "Good Feeling," plus its placement in the opening scene of CODA. Those uses kept the record in circulation far beyond its original chart run.
