Jive Samba

Quincy Jones · 1963
Recording

Recorded in 1962 for Mercury Records, the session featured Quincy Jones leading a big band ensemble with Nat Adderley on cornet as a key soloist, blending Latin samba rhythms with hard bop jazz vocabulary in Jones's characteristically orchestrated style. Released on the album 'Big Band Bossa Nova' in 1962, the track became one of the most commercially successful jazz recordings of the period, crossing over to pop chart audiences and demonstrating Jones's ability to synthesise Brazilian and American jazz idioms for a mainstream market. 'Jive Samba' has been covered and sampled across jazz and hip-hop contexts and remains one of the signature recordings of the bossa nova-jazz crossover era, sustaining Jones's reputation as an arranger capable of producing both critically credible and commercially popular work.
