Dirty Old Bossa Nova

Dirty Old Bossa Nova

The Howard Roberts Quartet · 1963
Recording

The track was recorded between June and July 1963 at Capitol Records Studio A in Hollywood, California, featuring leader Howard Roberts on guitar alongside bassist Chuck Berghofer, drummer Earl Palmer, and organist Burkley Kendrix. Released on the album H.R. Is a Dirty Guitar Player, the track highlighted Roberts' transition toward a soul-jazz aesthetic that integrated blues inflections into the contemporary bossa nova craze. The track earned enduring hip-hop reverence when its soulful jazz groove was sampled as the foundational loop for A Tribe Called Quest's 1996 hit single Jam.
