Bob Dylan · 1963Recording
Bob Dylan recorded the track at Columbia Studio A in New York City on June 15 and 16, 1965, with producer Tom Wilson and a band that included Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. The famous organ part came from Kooper’s impromptu contribution during the sessions. The song marked a decisive break from Dylan’s earlier acoustic folk style and helped redefine popular music in the mid-1960s. Its length, electric arrangement, and lyrical bite made it a landmark release for rock and singer-songwriters. It remains one of Dylan’s signature recordings and one of the most celebrated singles in rock history. The track has been covered widely and is regularly cited for its influence on later popular music.
