Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Bob Dylan · 1973Recording
Recorded in February 1973 at The Burbank Studios in Burbank, California, during the Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid sessions. The track features Bob Dylan with Roger McGuinn, Jim Keltner, Terry Paul, and backing vocals by Carol, Donna, and Brenda Patterson. Written for Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, it became the standout song from Dylan’s 1973 soundtrack album and a major hit single. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Dylan one of his biggest U.S. pop chart successes. It became one of Dylan’s most covered songs and remained a live staple, with later versions by artists such as Guns N' Roses helping to keep it in the mainstream. Its simple, direct structure made it a durable standard across rock and pop.
