Mystic Brew

Mystic Brew

Ronnie Foster · 1972
Recording

The track was recorded in January 1972 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, featuring Ronnie Foster on the Hammond B3 organ accompanied by electric guitarist Gene Bertoncini, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Jimmy Johnson. Serving as a centerpiece on Foster's debut album Two Headed Freap, the track helped establish his reputation as a vital contributor to the early 1970s soul-jazz and funk movement under Blue Note Records. The composition achieved monumental cross-generational significance when its electric piano and organ groove was famously sampled by A Tribe Called Quest for their 1993 hip-hop classic Electric Relaxation, and later by J. Cole for his 2013 track Forbidden Fruit.
