Recording

Recorded by the Indianapolis-based group led by organist Bobby Watley during the sessions for the album Superfunk. The track featured the band's trademark combination of organ, guitar, bass and drums and was released on Prestige's subsidiary funk imprint. The Better Half was part of Funk, Inc.'s early-1970s run of influential recordings that helped establish the group's reputation among jazz-funk audiences. It showcased the band's groove-oriented approach at a time when soul jazz was evolving toward funk-driven sounds. The track remains a respected deep-cut within the jazz-funk canon and is valued by DJs, collectors and crate diggers for its durable groove. Recordings by Funk, Inc. from this period became staples of rare-groove culture and later sample-based music scenes.
