Think Twice
Donald Byrd · 1975Recording
Recorded at The Sound Factory in Hollywood, California, during the 1974 sessions for Stepping Into Tomorrow. The track was produced by Larry Mizell and Fonce Mizell, with Donald Byrd fronting the album’s jazz-funk lineup. Released on Blue Note as part of Stepping Into Tomorrow, the track captured Byrd’s mid-1970s shift into sophisticated jazz-funk. It became one of the album’s standout cuts and helped define the Mizell Brothers’ polished, radio-friendly Blue Note sound. The track remained durable well beyond its release through repeated sampling and reinterpretation in hip-hop, house, and contemporary R&B. Erykah Badu, J Dilla, and Main Source all drew from it or covered it, confirming its status as a lasting groove source.
