Donald Byrd · 1975Recording
Recorded in 1975 in Los Angeles with producers Larry Mizell and Fonce Mizell, the session featured Harvey Mason on drums, Chuck Rainey on electric bass, and a full string and horn arrangement conducted by Wade Marcus. Released on the Places and Spaces album on Blue Note, the track reinforced the commercial and critical momentum Byrd and the Mizell Brothers had built since Black Byrd, consolidating the jazz-funk crossover sound that was reshaping Blue Note's identity in the mid-1970s. The track has been extensively sampled by hip-hop producers and remains a touchstone of the Mizell Brothers' production catalogue, regularly cited alongside Dominoes and Places and Spaces as defining documents of the jazz-funk era.
