You and the Music
Donald Byrd · 1975Recorded at The Sound Factory in Los Angeles in August 1975, with Donald Byrd on trumpet and flugelhorn alongside Chuck Rainey on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, Larry Mizell on piano, Fonce Mizell on clavinet and trumpet, Craig McMullen and John Rowin on guitar, Skip Scarborough on Fender Rhodes, Tyree Glenn Jr. on tenor saxophone, George Bohanon on trombone, and King Errisson and Mayuto Correa on congas and percussion. String arrangements were conducted by Wade Marcus. The fourth and final Byrd-Mizell collaboration for Blue Note, *Places and Spaces* represented the commercial and artistic peak of Byrd's jazz-funk period, and 'You And The Music' exemplified the Mizells' hallmark blend of rubbery funk rhythms, sweeping strings, and Byrd's lustrous flugelhorn, composed by Fonce and Larry Mizell. AllMusic awarded the album four stars, and it reached number 6 on the Billboard Soul Albums chart. The track gained renewed cultural visibility when it was featured on the WorldWide FM in-game radio station in the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V, introducing it to a vast new audience. The *Places and Spaces* album as a whole became a defining reference point for acid jazz, neo-soul, and hip-hop producers mining the Mizell Brothers' production style.
