It Should Have Been Me
Yvonne Fair · 1975Recording
It was recorded for Yvonne Fair’s 1975 Motown album The Bitch Is Black at Motown Recording Studios in Hollywood, California. Norman Whitfield produced and arranged the track, with Paul Riser credited on arrangement for the album sessions. It was the breakout cut from The Bitch Is Black and became Fair’s signature record. The single reached the UK Top 5 and gave her a rare U.S. pop-chart appearance, which made it the release that defined her Motown legacy. The song remains Fair’s best-known recording and is still treated as a high-water mark of mid-1970s Motown soul. Its dramatic vocal performance and later UK success kept it in circulation through reissues, compilations, and television use.
