Why Can't We Live Together?

Recorded in Miami in 1972 at the Glades Records studio, with Timmy Thomas largely performing alone on organ, bass pedals, and rhythm machine. Steve Alaimo heard the demo for TK’s Glades operation and helped guide the release. Released in late 1972, the track became a major early-1973 hit and reached the top three of the Billboard Hot 100. Its spare, message-song arrangement and drum-machine pulse made it stand out immediately. The song remains one of the landmark early hits built around a drum machine and minimal instrumentation. It has been widely sampled and referenced, including by Drake on “Hotline Bling.”
