Hard Times

Curtis Mayfield · 1972
Recording

Recorded in 1975 at Curtom Studio in Chicago for Curtis Mayfield’s album There’s No Place Like America Today. The track was written and produced by Mayfield, with Rich Tufo handling the arrangement on the album sessions. The song was one of the album’s central statements, turning the LP’s social critique toward everyday economic strain and survival. It helped define the record’s bleak, intimate tone and strengthened Mayfield’s reputation as a sharp chronicler of Black urban life. “Hard Times” became one of Mayfield’s most durable deep cuts, later reissued on the single pairing “So in Love / Hard Times” and repeatedly sampled or covered in hip-hop and soul circles. It remains part of the wider legacy of Mayfield’s socially conscious 1970s output.
