Louie Louie

Toots & The Maytals · 1972
Recording

Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica for Dynamic Sounds and issued in 1972, with Byron Lee credited as producer on the Slatyam Stoot release. The track also appeared that year on the Trojan UK single "Louie Louie" / "Pressure Drop '72". Toots & the Maytals turned Richard Berry’s rock and roll standard into a driving reggae cover that became one of the best-known songs from their 1972 period. It drew strong praise in later criticism and helped define the group’s crossover appeal beyond Jamaica. The recording remained a staple of Toots & the Maytals’ repertoire and a durable example of reggae reinterpreting classic rock material. It has continued to circulate through film use, reissues, and compilation appearances.
