Sweet and Dandy

Toots & The Maytals · 1968
Recording

Recorded in 1968 at Dynamic Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, with Leslie Kong producing. It came from the Beverley Records sessions that defined the group’s early reggae era. The track was released on the group’s 1969 Beverley Records album Sweet and Dandy and won the Jamaican Festival Song Contest in 1969. It also became one of the songs that helped establish Toots & the Maytals as leading voices of early reggae. Its inclusion in The Harder They Come gave it lasting international exposure, and it remains one of the group’s best-known songs. The song is still cited among the core titles that secured Toots & the Maytals’ place in reggae history.
