I Heard It Through the Grapevine
Marvin Gaye · 1968Recording
Marvin Gaye recorded the hit version at Hitsville U.S.A. (Studio A) in Detroit in 1967, with Norman Whitfield producing, the Andantes on background vocals, the Funk Brothers on the rhythm track, and Paul Riser handling the string arrangement. Released as a single in October 1968 on Tamla, the record became Gaye’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and one of Motown’s defining crossover hits. Its success turned an album track from In the Groove into a major pop and R&B breakthrough. The recording became a soul standard and one of Marvin Gaye’s signature songs, widely covered and sampled across later decades. It remains one of the most recognized Motown records and a touchstone for the label’s late-1960s sound.
