Recording

The Originals cut “Suspicion” at Motown in Detroit in 1966, with C.P. Spencer on lead vocal. It was a Holland-Dozier-Holland production; Joe Hinton is also credited on the released recording. The track became a prized unreleased Motown side and a Northern Soul favorite after circulating on a discarded test pressing. It captured the group in their early Motown period, before their first commercial breakthrough. “Suspicion” remains one of the group’s best-known deep cuts and a touchstone for Motown/Northern Soul collectors. Its afterlife on compilations and club playlists kept the song in circulation long after its original recording date.
