The Marvelettes · 1986
Recording

The Marvelettes recorded it at Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit in April 1961 for Tamla, with lead vocals by Gladys Horton. Brian Holland and Robert Bateman produced the session under the shared credit Brianbert. The single became Motown’s first No. 1 pop hit and the group’s breakthrough record. It turned the Marvelettes into the label’s first star act and established Motown on the national pop chart. The song has remained one of the best-known early Motown records and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. It has been widely covered, including by the Beatles and the Carpenters, and is still treated as a defining Motown standard.
