Recording

Recorded in New York during the Raising Hell sessions, with Run-D.M.C. working under Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons at Chung King Studios. The track opens the album and features Jam Master Jay’s turntable work alongside the duo’s traded verses. As the opening track on Raising Hell, it set the tone for the album’s harder, more stripped-down sound and helped frame the group’s shift into a more confident, album-oriented peak. The song also drew attention for its tightly built sample-based production and its showcase of turntablism and call-and-response rapping. The track remains one of Run-D.M.C.’s signature album cuts and has been widely sampled and referenced by later hip-hop artists, reinforcing its status as a foundational piece of mid-1980s rap production. Its opening-chime motif and performance style helped define the group’s enduring sound.
