Sucker M.C.'s (Krush-Groove 1)

RUN-DMC · 1984
Recording

Recorded in New York City at Greene Street Recording for Run-D.M.C.’s debut era, with the group working with producer Larry Smith and the Orange Krush-derived drum-and-scratch framework that shaped the single’s spare sound. The release credits Russell Simmons and Larry Smith on the original Run-D.M.C. material. As the group’s first single, it introduced the stripped-down, hard-edged style that helped define the new school of hip-hop and set Run-D.M.C. apart from the more elaborate production common in earlier rap records. Contemporary retrospectives describe it as a record that changed how hip-hop sounded and sold. The track remains a cornerstone of early hip-hop and has been repeatedly referenced and sampled, including in Run-D.M.C.’s own later work such as “Sucker D.J.’s.” Its influence persists as a model for minimal, drum-driven rap production.
