Play That Beat Mr. DJ

Play That Beat Mr. DJ

G.L.O.B.E & Whiz Kid · 1984
Recording

Released in 1983 on Tommy Boy Records, the track paired G.L.O.B.E. of Soulsonic Force with turntablist Whiz Kid. It was produced by Tom Silverman and Craig Harris with writing credited to John Miller and Harold McGuire. Play That Beat Mr DJ was one of the early Tommy Boy hip hop singles and helped define the labels electro era. Its scratching and DJ centered hook made it a key early 1980s club and street record. The track remains a frequently sampled early electro hip hop record and is documented by WhoSampled as sampled in more than forty later songs. It also continued through later reissues and remixes including Ben Liebrand versions.
