The Party Scene

The Party Scene

The Russell Brothers · 1983
Recording

Recorded at Quad Studio in New York with engineer Frank Heller and producer Larry Joseph, after the Russell Brothers were introduced into the session by their sister’s husband Mike. The track began as an instrumental called “Electric Boogie” before the brothers and Heller rebuilt it into “The Party Scene.” Released in 1983 on Portrait, the single became a sharp early-electro statement from Bronx natives who were also part of the Zulu Nation. Its tight drum-machine groove and rap delivery made it a cult favorite in early electro circles. The track remained a sought-after electro break and was later sampled by the Beastie Boys on “Time to Get Ill” and by Beck on “Hollywood Freaks.” It is also remembered as one of the Russell Brothers’ defining releases.
