Recording

Recorded in April 1982 by Cybotron in Detroit, with Juan Atkins and Richard Davis sharing the electronic parts and vocals. The single’s best-known 12-inch version became associated with Jose “Animal” Diaz’s remix work. Released in 1983 on Fantasy as the third single from Enter, “Clear” became one of Cybotron’s defining records. It helped set the template for Detroit techno and early electro with its stark machine-funk sound. “Clear” has been widely sampled and reused, most notably by Missy Elliott on “Lose Control” and by Poison Clan on “Shake Whatcha’ Mama Gave Ya.” It remains one of the foundational tracks in the history of techno and electro.
