The Egyptian Lover · 1984
Recording

Recorded in 1984 in Los Angeles as the debut solo single from The Egyptian Lover’s On the Nile era, with Greg Broussard (The Egyptian Lover) handling the production. It was issued as the first Egyptian Lover 12-inch on Freak Beat Records, and the album track came from On the Nile, which was released on Egyptian Empire Records. The track became a defining West Coast electro record and a club hit for The Egyptian Lover. On the Nile’s liner-era history links the song to the artist’s push to make music that DJs could play widely, and Billboard placed it on the Hot Black Singles chart. “Egypt, Egypt” remains The Egyptian Lover’s signature recording and one of the most cited electro-rap tracks of the 1980s. Stones Throw later reissued it as a special pyramid-shaped edition, underscoring its lasting cult status.
