Recording

Prince tracked the song at Sunset Sound in Hollywood on 25 March 1984, returned there for vocal overdubs on 4 April 1984, and completed a remix in mid-July 1984. The release credits Prince and the Revolution, but the recording features Prince and Sheila E. only, with Sheila E. on co-lead vocals. Released as the B-side to "Let's Go Crazy" in 1984, it became a club hit in the United States and was promoted separately in the UK as a 12-inch single. It was also the first Prince release to include input from Sheila E., making it a notable Purple Rain-era side track. The track became one of Prince’s best-known B-sides and was later collected on The Hits / The B-Sides and Girl 6. It remained part of his live repertoire and kept returning in reissues and special editions, including the Purple Rain Deluxe Expanded Edition.
