Recording

Prince first tracked the song at Sunset Sound Studio 2 in Hollywood on 27 April 1982, then rebuilt the album version in September 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, and Susannah Melvoin added backing vocals on the 1984 version. Released on Prince’s Paisley Park label, it was the first single from Around the World in a Day in North America and Japan and became the album’s most successful single. It reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 17 weeks on the chart. It remains one of Prince’s signature songs and has stayed prominent through compilations, live performances, and later reissues. Its video and single have kept it central to his 1985 breakout era.
