Recorded during the December 1984–May 1985 sessions for Street Called Desire, with René Moore and Angela Winbush handling the core vocals and keyboards and Bobby Watson and Bruce Swedien among the credited producers. The album sessions took place at René & Angela's Studios, Ocean Way Recording, Image Recorders, Greene St. Recording, Evergreen Recording, and A&R Studios. Released in 1985 as the second single from Street Called Desire, it became one of René & Angela's defining singles and a top-five R&B hit in the United States. It also reached the UK Singles Chart, helping establish the duo beyond their domestic R&B audience. The song became the duo's best-known title and remained a frequent reference point for later R&B and hip-hop records. Foxy Brown's 'I'll Be' directly sampled it, and Gospel Gangstaz also used it, extending its reach into later generations.
