Recording

Prince first cut "Kiss" on 28 April 1985 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, where it began as an acoustic blues-style demo for Mazarati before Prince reclaimed it and rebuilt it for Parade. The single credit lists Prince and David Z. Rivkin as producers, with Prince performing the lead vocals and most of the instrumentation. Released on 5 February 1986 as the lead single from Parade, "Kiss" became a major comeback-level pop hit and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. Its lean arrangement and falsetto vocal made it one of Prince's most distinctive mainstream singles. "Kiss" remains one of Prince's signature recordings and a staple of his catalog, regularly included on major compilations and live setlists. Its stripped-down groove and vocal style have stayed influential far beyond its original release.
