Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent

Released in 1986 as the lead single from Good to Go Lover; Gwen Guthrie wrote and produced the track herself. The single’s original release was on Polydor in the United States, with a UK issue on Boiling Point. It became Guthrie’s biggest hit, reaching No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and one week at No. 1 on Hot Black Singles. In the UK it peaked at No. 5 and helped define her profile beyond club circles. The track remained widely recognized for its “no romance without finance” refrain and was later sampled by artists including Foxy Brown and Utah Saints. It is still cited as one of Guthrie’s signature songs and as a durable club-era anthem.
