Mary Jane Girls recorded Candy Man in 1982 at The Record Plant in Sausalito, California for their 1983 debut album. Rick James wrote, produced, and arranged the track, with JoJo McDuffie as the principal lead vocalist and the Stone City Band supporting the album sessions. Candy Man was the debut single from Mary Jane Girls and introduced the Rick James-formed group on Gordy Records in 1983. It reached number 23 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart, and Candy Man, All Night Long, and Boys jointly reached number 8 on Billboard's dance chart. Candy Man remains an early signature record for the group and part of Rick James's Motown-era production catalogue. Its later reach includes Kylie Minogue's use of the track on Always Find the Time.
