Chaka Khan · 1983
Recording

It was recorded in 1983 by Rufus with Chaka Khan at Amigo Studios in Hollywood, with John “JR” Robinson on drums and David “Hawk” Wolinski as the writer. Russ Titelman produced the release. Issued on November 4, 1983 from Stompin' at the Savoy, it became Rufus’ final No. 1 R&B hit and reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also won the 1984 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The song became one of Chaka Khan’s signature recordings and has been widely covered and reworked across pop, R&B, and dance music. Its enduring status is reflected in later hit versions, high-profile performances, and repeated use in retrospectives on her career.
