Recording

Recorded in 1980 for What Cha' Gonna Do for Me at Mountain Studios in Montreux, Switzerland, with Arif Mardin producing; the album also received additional recording in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. It appeared on Chaka Khan’s 1981 album What Cha' Gonna Do for Me and was not issued as a single. It nevertheless circulated as a notable album cut and turned up on disco and post-disco compilations. The track’s instrumental intro was later sampled by Stardust for 1998’s "Music Sounds Better with You," and it was also sampled by Statik Selektah in 2015. That sampling history kept the song active in club and hip-hop-adjacent listening circles.
