UB40 · 1981Recording
Recorded during the Present Arms sessions at The Music Centre in Wembley, with UB40 and Ray "Pablo" Falconer producing. The track was issued as a 1981 single on DEP International. As the second single from Present Arms, it turned UB40's unemployment-themed protest into a UK Top 10 hit. It peaked at number 7 on the Official Singles Chart and helped establish the album as a major follow-up to Signing Off. The song remained a durable UB40 set piece and was remixed in 1992 by 808 State, which took it back into the UK Top 20. Its title and lyric-driven social commentary kept it associated with early-1980s British protest pop.
