The Jolly Boys · 2010Recorded at Geejam Studios in Port Antonio, Jamaica, for the 2010 album Great Expectation. The session was produced by Jon Baker and Dale Virgo, with the Jolly Boys’ lead singer Albert Minott fronting the track; the song was the first one tracked for the album. At release, the track was singled out as the album’s standout cover and as a vivid example of the Jolly Boys’ mento approach to modern rock and pop material. Reviewers and profile pieces treated it as a bridge between Jamaican mento tradition and a younger audience. The track helped make Great Expectation the group’s late-career breakthrough and became one of the Jolly Boys’ best-known recordings outside Jamaica. It remains closely associated with the band’s revival of mento and with renewed international interest in the style.
