Gigolo Rapp
Disco Daddy & Captain Rapp · 1981Recording
Recorded and mixed at KSR Recording Studio in Hollywood, California, with Jerry Robinson engineering the sessions. The original release credited producers Cletus Anderson, Jerry Hooks Sr., Michael Green, and Ricky Maxwell. Released in 1981 on Rappers Rapp Disco Co., the track marked the debut release for both Disco Daddy and Captain Rapp and is widely identified as the first authentic West Coast hip-hop record. It established the label’s profile in Los Angeles and became a local success. The song remains a landmark in West Coast rap history and is still cited as the region’s first commercially released rap record. Later histories of hip-hop continue to treat it as a foundational early West Coast release.
