Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)
Loose Ends · 1985Recording
Recorded in Philadelphia in 1984 with American producer Nick Martinelli, with Loose Ends working at Sigma Sound Studios. The single reflects the trio’s London roots and their Philadelphia session work with Martinelli. Released in February 1985 on Virgin, it became Loose Ends’ breakthrough hit, peaking at No. 13 on the UK Official Singles Chart and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. It was the first British band’s record to top that U.S. R&B chart. The track remains one of Loose Ends’ signature recordings and a heavily sampled R&B classic, with later uses by artists including Big Daddy Kane and Wiz Khalifa. Its 808-driven production and crossover success kept it central to discussions of 1980s UK soul and Philly-influenced R&B.
