Soothing

Recorded in Los Angeles for Semper Femina with Blake Mills producing and Laura Marling on vocals and guitar, alongside Matt Ingram, Nick Pini, Pete Randall, Matt Chamberlain, Sebastian Steinberg, and Rob Moose. The album was recorded at NRG Studios, Berkley Sound Studios Santa Monica, and Randall Court Studios. The song launched Semper Femina as the album’s lead single and was introduced with Marling’s self-directed video. Critics singled it out as an atmospheric, low-stringed opener that set the tone for the record’s intimate look at women. Soothing remains one of the clearest entry points into Semper Femina and a key example of Marling’s move toward a denser, more cinematic sound. Its self-directed video also marked a notable step in her visual work beyond songwriting.
