Keith Sweat · 1987
Recording

Keith Sweat recorded the debut album cut at INS Recording and Power Play Studios in New York City with Teddy Riley. Riley brought the track’s beat and co-produced it with Sweat, shaping the single around Sweat’s vocal delivery. Released as the lead single from Make It Last Forever, the song became Keith Sweat’s first major hit and a defining early new jack swing record. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and crossed over to the top five of the Hot 100. The track remains one of Keith Sweat’s signature songs and a standard reference point for late-1980s new jack swing. Its crossover success helped establish the style on mainstream radio and in later retrospective histories of R&B and pop.
