It Be’s That Way Sometimes

It Be’s That Way Sometimes

Nina Simone · 1967
Recording

Recorded in 1967 at RCA Studio B in New York for Silk & Soul, the song was written by Simone's brother Sam Waymon. Danny Davis produced the recording, with arrangements by Sammy Lowe and engineering by Ray Hall. The song opened Silk & Soul, Simone's second RCA Victor album. Its inclusion placed a composition by her brother alongside contemporary songs and material addressing freedom and racial prejudice. Retrospective critic John Bush singled it out as a highlight of Silk & Soul. It remains a documented example of the musical collaboration between Simone and Sam Waymon.
