Higher and Higher
Jackie Wilson · 1967Recording
Recorded in Chicago for Brunswick Records and produced by Carl Davis, with arrangement by Sonny Sanders. The session used Motown’s Funk Brothers players including James Jamerson, Richard “Pistol” Allen, Robert White, and Johnny Griffith. Released in 1967, the single became Jackie Wilson’s comeback smash, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was one of Brunswick’s biggest-selling records and a major late-1960s soul hit. The song remains one of Wilson’s signature recordings and is remembered as his last No. 1 R&B hit. It also stayed in circulation through later chart activity, cover versions, and uses in popular culture.
