Desmond Dekker & the Aces · 1967
Recording

It was recorded in Jamaica in 1967 with Desmond Dekker backed by the Aces, and produced by Leslie Kong for Pyramid. The single emerged from Kong’s Beverley’s orbit in Kingston, where Dekker built his early recording career. The track became Dekker’s first international hit and a defining rude boy anthem. It reached No. 14 on the UK Singles Chart and became the first Jamaican-produced record to enter the UK top 20. The song remained one of Dekker’s best-known recordings and continued to circulate through covers, samples, and soundtrack placements. Musical Youth, The Bodysnatchers, Special Ed, and Shaggy all drew on it in later years.
