Rudy, A Message To You
Dandy Livingstone · 1967Recording
Dandy Livingstone recorded the song in 1967 at Maximum Sounds Studio on Old Kent Road in London, with Vic Keary engineering. Rico Rodriguez added the trombone intro shortly after the main session. It first appeared in July 1967 on the Ska Beat label and became one of Livingstone's best-known rude-boy warnings. The record later gained wider recognition through The Specials' 1979 cover. The song endured as a ska and rocksteady standard, with its melody and message carried forward by The Specials and repeated in later covers and revivals. Rico Rodriguez's association with both versions reinforced its place in ska history.
