Recorded in 1982 at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California, for the Mary Jane Girls’ debut album. Rick James wrote, arranged, and produced the track. The single introduced the Mary Jane Girls’ sleek, Rick James-directed sound and became their best-known release in the UK, where it reached the Top 20. In the United States, it was a stronger R&B record than pop crossover, peaking on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The track became a major sampling source for later hip-hop and R&B artists and remains the Mary Jane Girls song most widely remembered by listeners. Billboard later included it among the greatest girl-group songs of all time.
