Tonight's Da Night

Redman · 1992
Recording

Recorded during the 1991 and 1992 sessions for Whut? Thee Album at Ian London Studios, North Shore Soundworks, and Power Play Studios in New York. Redman performed the track, with Erick Sermon producing and Redman credited as co-producer under his birth name, Reggie Noble. Released in 1993 as the third single from Whut? Thee Album, it extended Redman's breakout run after Blow Your Mind and Time 4 Sum Aksion. The single reached Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and helped establish his rough, comic solo voice within the Hit Squad circle. The track remains one of Redman's signature early records and a staple example of Erick Sermon's murky funk production. Its sample collage, Hurricane G intro, and Newark edge have kept it visible in later freestyles and retrospectives on 1990s rap.
