King Bee · 1989
Recording

The track was cut in the recording sessions for De La Soul’s debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, with Prince Paul and the trio shaping it in the New York studio environment that produced the record. It was built around a Funkadelic sample and reworked at the label’s request into a more radio-friendly single. Released in 1989 on Tommy Boy Records, it became De La Soul’s breakout crossover hit and their only Top 40 entry on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached No. 1 on the R&B chart and defined the group’s self-aware, individuality-first image. The song remains De La Soul’s signature track and one of the defining singles of late-1980s alternative hip-hop. Its hook and message of self-possession have kept it in steady circulation through compilations, playlists, and wide cultural recognition.
