You Gots To Chill

EPMD · 1988
Recording

Recorded in 1988 for EPMD’s debut album Strictly Business at North Shore Soundworks and Island Media Studios in New York. Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith produced the track, with Charlie Marotta and the album’s other engineers handling the recording and mix. Released as a single from Strictly Business, the track helped establish EPMD as one of late-1980s hip-hop’s defining duo acts. It became a notable rap-radio title, reaching No. 22 on Billboard’s Hot Black Singles chart. The song became one of EPMD’s signature records and has remained a staple of old-school hip-hop playlists. Its opening line and groove have been widely referenced, sampled, and interpolated by later artists.
