Recording

Recorded in 1979 at United Sound Studios in Detroit after Bootsy Collins and George Clinton brought Zapp to Warner Bros.; Roger Troutman wrote, arranged, and co-produced the track with Collins. The song launched Zapp’s debut single campaign and became the group’s breakthrough, reaching No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping establish their talk-box-driven sound. It also became a Top 10 R&B hit and a defining early-1980s electro-funk record. It became one of the most sampled Zapp recordings, with its bassline and groove echoed throughout later hip-hop and West Coast funk production. The track also remained a signature calling card for Roger Troutman and Zapp in film, compilation, and DJ culture.
